About the Role

The Family Proceedings Advisory Service (FPAS) was established following the implementation of The Children (Guernsey and Alderney) Law 2008. As a Family Proceedings Adviser, you will represent the interests of children and young people in both public and private family court proceedings, as well as within the Child, Youth, and Community Tribunal. The service also provides mediation for families involved in disputes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce clear, concise court reports based on thorough assessments, with a focus on the child’s best interests, and provide evidence at hearings
  • Gather and consider the views of children, adults, and partner agencies to help shape and improve service delivery
  • Present detailed public and private law reports to the court in cases involving adoption, matrimonial issues, and more, in accordance with legal requirements
  • Maintain accurate records and statistics for internal reporting purposes
  • Stay informed on legal and practice developments, contributing to ongoing policy and procedure reviews
  • Uphold equal opportunity principles in all aspects of work
  • Regularly attend court to receive case referrals and directions
  • Provide in-court mediation and dispute resolution services
  • Collaborate with families, the court, advocates, and other stakeholders to achieve the best possible outcomes
  • Support the Child, Youth, and Community Tribunal and the Court in line with the 2008 Children Law
  • Engage in continuous professional development and relevant training
  • Keep comprehensive case notes in line with court and service protocols
  • Undertake training as a family mediator and actively contribute to the mediation service
  • Help develop and improve service offerings, using initiative and sound judgment in your role

Key Criteria

Essential

  • A recognised professional qualification (CQSW, DIPSW, or equivalent) and a minimum of three years’ post-qualification experience in childcare social work
  • Strong knowledge and experience in childcare practices, court procedures, and supporting families in crisis
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills with the ability to analyse complex information
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage and deliver a range of services
  • Proven experience in working collaboratively with families, courts, and multi-agency teams
  • Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Desirable

  • Experience in Court Welfare, Guardian, or Family Proceedings Adviser roles
