West Mercia announce Carl Williams as its new ACC

The force said Dr Carl Williams currently serves with Gwent Police and will bring with him two decades of "varied and distinguished" policing experience.

In a statement, West Mercia Police said ACC Williams had been the successful candidate after a comprehensive recruitment process.

He began his career in 2006, and has a background that includes leadership across neighbourhood policing, specialist operations, strategic command, and national policing functions.

His previous roles have included Chief Superintendent for Neighbourhood Policing & Specialist Operations, force wide Head of Territorial Policing, Local Area Policing Commander and Strategic Lead for the Force Contact Centre and Head of Unit for Op Opal, the UK wide Serious Organised Acquisitive Crime intelligence function.

Alongside his operational leadership, ACC Williams has contributed to policing nationally through work with HMICFRS and he also holds a Doctorate in Criminal Justice and completed the Executive Leadership Programme last summer.

In his new role with West Mercia Police, the new ACC will take strategic responsibility for Crime and Vulnerability. In this role he oversees major and serious organised crime investigations, strategic vulnerability, public contact, crime management, intelligence, and forensic departments.

His start date will be confirmed in due course.
