Approved Premises Staff

Offenders, who are assessed as presenting a high risk of harm to others, may require close supervision and surveillance if they are to be safely managed during the early stages of their release from Prison or at the start of a Community Order. In such circumstances they may be required to live in Approved Premises (hostels) managed and staffed by the Probation service or a contracted third sector agency. The titles/grades of AP staffing vary across the Probation Areas. Typical staffing would be a manager (SPO level) supported by one or more deputy managers (PO equivalent) who manage the Approved premises, take part in assessing an offender’s suitability for residence and who will attend MAPPA meetings to help devise appropriate risk management plans. Assistant Managers (PSO equivalent) generally have key worker roles with individual offenders and are responsible for overseeing AP rules are kept.
