Education Worker

Some YOTs do not have access to seconded Education staff and will recruit for this post. YOT Education workers assist with advocating and brokering access to Education on behalf of children and young people. This is a highly significant intervention as research shows that participation in Education and the attainment of work related skills are major protective factors for offending and reoffending.

Responsibilities may include:

• Contributing to the Education Training and Employment (ETE) assessment which draws on existing information in Education and schools and other agencies.
• Referring for specialist assessments and reviewing progress of the referral
• Assisting with the development and implementation of an Individual Learning Plan working with the young person and their parent/carer.
• Providing interventions to support and prevent exclusion, sustain attendance and achievement.
• Following local policies on working with Looked After Children
• Ensuring that all work undertaken reflects multiple needs associated with ethnicity and other diversity considerations.
• Working towards achievement of local and National targets and providing performance management information as required.
• Developing and maintaining contacts with relevant agencies and services.
• Presenting information regarding the role of the YOS to schools and educational and other related services.

It is likely that Education Workers will need to have previous teaching or other experience in mainstream and/or alternative educational provision together with experience of working in the youth justice system or working with young people subject to YOS supervision.
